A rear carrier attaches to the rear of of your van on either the passenger or driver side door. The main purpose of a rear carrier is to free up space in your van by being able to store items on the outside.
Rear carriers can serve different purposes. As you can see on the driver side in the picture above you have one carrier holding a spare tire w/ a ladder attached. On the passenger side you have a the carrier with a plate that is modular and has the capability of holding different types of attachments.

Do I need both a passenger side & driver side?
Well that is entirely up to you and in short, no. If you are looking to maximize the space in your van then both may be a great option! If your simply just looking somewhere to store a rear tire then maybe just the driver carrier is for you!
